Both of these things sound incredibly unappetizing. I realize that donating blood is well and good, but I hate needles and I’ve heard plenty of blood donating horror stories (“they couldn’t find an artery and now my whole arm is purple!”).

On the other hand, I can’t think of even one good reason whatsoever to see any Saw movie.

Broomball’s tonight! This will be my third consecutive trip, all with Amanda. So I’m three for three - I was in Ireland freshman year.
Our first Broomball was our second date, and the cameraphone photo above is how she asked me. Cute, right? She’s great.

That’s my mom in red and my dad in black. The YMCA region...

That’s my mom in red and my dad in black. The YMCA region that mom works in has an annual video competition, and this is the entry from the branch she runs. She’s the defending Best Actress.

Geologists confirm that a 35-mile-long rift that opened in Ethiopia in 2005— it ripped apart more than 20 feet in just days — is likely the start of a new ocean..

Are you kidding me? A new ocean? I hope this happens (especially if/as long as no one gets hurt in the process). I badly want to know more. Also, Google would definitely buy the naming rights to this, no?

nbaplayoffs2009:

Here’s what we’re going to miss from Walton.

Walton is hilarious and absurd without being frustrating or distracting, which is a real treat. Too bad his health problems are sidelining him.

This video is worth watching even if you don’t really care about basketball or Walton if only because of the way Walton starts his correspondence.

Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend charmingly teaching me to play a...

Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend charmingly teaching me to play a song of his that I already know how to play. I like how he acknowledges that he still messes up occasionally.

The show greatly exceeded my already very high expectations - it started at 7:30 and didn’t end until 11. The Monsters looked sharp in dark suits and white shirts, playing most of their debut album and interspersing solo work. The encore, which I’ll get to, was unexpectedly incredible.

While Kentucky local Jim James was the crowd favorite, M. Ward stole the show as far as the solo songs went, whether the rest of the band backed him or he played alone.

There wasn’t much stage banter, although Conor Oberst made sure to mix in plenty of “Bwwwwahahahaha”s when the lights were down. They were note perfect, as Ward, James, and Oberst traded through bass, piano/keys, and guitars while Mike Mogis impressed all night on lap slide, steel, electric guitars, and mandolin (plus one turn on bass during the encore).

Oh, right, the encore. After ripping through about 25 songs, James told us to take a 20 minute break and prepare for an encore. About 30 minutes later, the curtain rose with the Monsters in their new Halloween garb: they were dressed as Kiss and jammed out “Detroit Rock City”, followed by their own “Whole Lotta Losin’” and Bright Eyes’ “Another Traveling Song”, then finally closed the night with “I Want to Rock and Roll All Night” by Kiss. For the last song they invited some of their favorite audience costumes up with them (M. Ward looked like he hated everything about his costume, and looked hilariously uncomfortable with the crowded stage).

I’ll post video of the show, especially the special Kiss encore, if any pops up. It’s probably worth your time to try to find them, and I would DEFINITELY recommend catching them live if you can. If you’re familiar with their back catalogs but not the MoF album, it’s definitely still worth seeing, although I doubt you’ll get the surreal encore that Louisville did. Check the Louisville Courier-Journal’s write up for more coverage.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite costumes from last night, although I’m pretty sure this guy didn’t make it onstage.

It’s titled Romance is Boring and is coming out 2.1.10. (2010 is going to be a great year for new tunes, as 2009 has been.)

Tracklist:

In Medias Res
There Are Listed Buildings (watch)
Romance is Boring
We’ve Got Your Back (Documented Minor Emotional Breakdown #2)
Plan A
200-102
Straight in at 101
Who Fell Asleep In
I Warned You: Do Not Make an Enemy of Me
Heart Swells/100-1
I Just Sighed.
