my 70 favorite songs of 2011

At the start of 2010, I decided that I’d keep a list of my favorite music from the year in a Tumblr draft, easily sorted and edited and not prone to get lost like some paper list or word document.  It made linking to the songs a much less arduous task in my year-end roundup, too.

So, right after I posted my favorites from last year, I started the draft pictured above.  Here’s hoping it’s a long list in 362 days.

My 32 favorite songs of 2010

Here, in no particular order, are my favorite songs from this year.  I haven’t ordered them - to be honest, I intended to, but I’m not sure who it would help.

Also, I’ve included links to hear / watch / download all of the songs here.  If I link to an mp3, it’s free and legal, so most of them are from band or label sites.

Oh, and some of these (“Free Energy”, “When I’m with You”) came out in 2009, but the full-length album they’re on came out in 2010.

My Favorite Albums of 2010

This year my music listening followed a somewhat unusual pattern: due to finishing my undergraduate degree last December, I probably listened to more music through the first four months of the year that was typical for me.  During the summer, I got married, which was great, and also busy, so I think my listening decreased, and then stayed somewhat low when I entered graduate school in the fall.

All that said, I liked a lot of stuff that came out this year, some of which is reflected here, and some of which is not evident here but will be on a forthcoming favorite songs list.  These releases span the year pretty well, I think; maybe a little unbalanced toward the first half of the year, but including some stuff I started loving just recently.

Oh, and I don’t necessarily make claims that these are THE BEST (although I think they’re all very very good) - thus the “favorite” in the title up there.  It’s not a matter of not taking a stand; I’m just well aware this is a one-man list that obviously reflects my listening patterns and slants toward things that I experienced personally, whether it’s live experiences of the music or just reflective of a stage in life.
